Our Personal experience with Roof Damage Insurance claim.

Spencer TX Real Estate –
Our personal home was hit by the “lemon size” Hail Storm that came through the DFW area on June 1, 2025. Driving through town I recognize I’m not alone; there are roofer/contractor signs on every other house.

But the question is; should you involve your Insurance Company as well?

When the storm came through did you call a Roofing Company, or your Insurance Company first?

If you called the roofer first – Did you only call one Roofer? Why?

Let’s explore these questions.

Who Should I call First?

Hands down if the roof is leaking, You need a roofer out there to stop it.

The pitch on steep pitch roofs can be extremely dangerous so it is not advised you attempt this yourself.

You should recognize whatever company comes out is going to want a contingency contract with you to do any sort of emergency work.

Spencer TX Real Estate would always recommend interviewing at least a couple of roofing companies to determine their level of attention to detail.

Understand that many of these companies use sub-contractors. Whoever you agree to do the roof, will then hire-out another company to complete the work.

Some of the companies we interviewed may even use the same sub-contractors.

When to involve the Insurance Company?

Sometimes it is unwise to involve the Insurance Company given the level of damage, your deductible, your premiums, etc., we’ll explore more on that later.

If the Roofing Company thinks it might be wise to involve the Insurance Company, then possibly.

This is where we would recommend getting a second opinion, and interviewing a couple of roofing companies.

What will a Roof Replacement Cost?

Spencer TX Real Estate: Andrea has met with 8 different Roofing Companies and have yet to get an estimate to replace our roof.

Every Roofing Company we talked to wants to work directly with our Insurance Company.

I am seriously starting to wonder; Why is that?

Why you wouldn’t want to involve the Insurance Company.

Your Deductible is likely 2% of your determined property replacement cost. Depending on the value of your property we’re looking at potentially $10,000+/-.

In order to be eligible for a Full Roof Replacement there needs to be damage on multiple areas of the roof. If the damage is limited to one area, the insurance will suggest you repair that area.

If the insurance does not deem the roof needing a full replacement, but a repair – your deductible will likely cover the amount for a repair.

Now – You have an insurance claim on the property with no payout from the Insurance, and will still need to make the repairs to the roof.
